The World of Styling
Through the Lens of Renowned Stylist & Stone Windsor Childrenswear Founder
Founder Charlene Roxborough has lived in the styling world since her early twenties, working on music videos and album covers, styling celebrities Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashian, and captivating events like the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival.
As her looks appear in editorials & on the red carpet, we share your curiosity in looking behind the scenes to explore how Charlene styles pieces to complement each of her clients. We sat down with her to discover her styling tips.
What does your day to day look like as a stylist?
My morning routine begins with my daughter Stone, making breakfast and choosing an outfit for school. After dropping her off, I enter work-mode. Depending on the day and project, I’ll pop into a boutique or reach out to showrooms, requesting lookbooks or researching the latest collections.
I always pick up Stone from school, and then get back to work – the art of multitasking as a working mom.
Describe the process of starting with a new client?
As a stylist, my job is to create outfits that capture my clients’ unique narratives. I always begin my work with an in-person or virtual meet and greet to get to know them and their styling needs.
For some clients, we work together on an ongoing basis, which can encompass creating looks for events and their day-to-day life. I find it is helpful to begin with an audit of their closet, discovering which staples can be added to build a well-rounded wardrobe.
For others, I work to create looks for red carpet events like the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival. Our initial meet and greet includes event details and deciding on a direction for their look.
How do you source pieces for your clients?
My eye gravitates towards unique, timeless pieces and modern shapes. Whether it be through Vogue, Instagram, traveling, or popping by showrooms and boutiques, I love discovering new brands and designers. At the end of the day, vintage will always be my go-to resource.
How do you balance dressing your clients in a manner that is timeless and on trend?
My philosophy is to give my clients the best of both worlds, blending the timeless and the modern. We begin by setting a foundation of staple pieces that already exist in their closet, and explore mixing and playing with combinations that elevate and intrigue—bringing an authentic style story to their lifestyle.
How do you know when you’ve landed on the final look?
For me, styling is second nature. I know I’ve found the final look when the pieces come to life instantly.
